I am not Det. Megan Wheeler or the actress who plays her, Julianne Nicholson. The Law & Order franchise and all characters therein are owned by NBC Universal and Wolf Films.
Name: Megan Wheeler
Age: 34
Born: February 27, 1974.
Megan was born to Johnny and Cheryl Wheeler. Her mother was a homemaker and her father was a copyright lawyer in midtown. The Wheelers lived in the suburbs and had a typical suburban life. Three years after Megan was born, her younger sister, Karen, came along. The girls attended private school and everything was going well until Johnny disappeared when Megan was ten. One day he took the train in to work and never returned. After he left, her mother became a waitress to support the family.
About a year ago, Megan found out that her father had not been a copyright lawyer but had actually worked for the State Liquor Authority and was an "in" lawyer who took bribes and possibly had mob connections. Upon finding this out, she tracked down old acquaintances of his, including those who knew him up to ten years ago. That was as far as she got though, when the trail ran cold.
While Megan took care of her sister a lot when they were growing up, they couldn't be more different. Karen got pregnant immediately after high school and has a 12-year old son, Jonathan. Megan sometimes watches or visits with her nephew, usually when he's over Megan's mother's, or when Jonathan visits her own apartment, however her relationship with her sister is more complex. Karen only usually calls when she's in a jam and Megan often gives her the money or whatever she needs, usually feeling guilty afterward.
Megan went to SUNY Stony Brook and majored in Mathematics. She likes puzzles, but more than wanting to simply find answers, she's the type who wants to know why the pieces fit together.
It was this reason, and the lingering desire to find out what had happened to her father, that led her to enter the police academy upon her graduation from SUNY. She wasn’t sure about firing guns or chasing after people but she was fairly certain that she could handle the interrogation part. After going through the academy, Megan became a uniform, first for three years on a foot patrol beat, and then for another two years in the White Collar Crime division.
While she gained some street smarts working foot patrol, in White Collar she mostly ran papers back and forth. That is until she stumbled across a piece of evidence during a high-profile case. The perpetrator was a prominent mathematician and the case was reliant on several theorems of his. While the investigators struggled to connect the dots, Megan found a link while reading over some of the math-related notes that the perp had written. Though she was never publicly rewarded, while still a uniform, the division called on her when numbers-related problems came up and she was able to assist them. Finally, about a year and a half after helping with that first case, Megan took the detectives exam and passed. She was put in White Collar Crimes and never saw much street action until a couple years later.
That was when Captain Danny Ross recruited her to be part of the inter-department money laundering taskforce. It was here that she gained more street smarts, occasionally working undercover and in high-pressure situations. She also became close to Captain Ross—he became a mentor to her, in some ways the father-figure that she never had, but also a friend who treated her on the same level as the other more experienced detectives. She did so well that when the taskforce ended, Captain Ross brought her with him to his new post at Major Case.
Megan still isn’t sure about her new partner, or what Ross was thinking when he assigned her to Detective Mike Logan, but she’s slowly getting used to the older detective. Her other partners, Eddie Jinks on foot patrol and Chris Howe at White Collar, were more like herself in personality, and easier to talk to. She’s not quite sure what she’s gotten herself into with the big leaguers at Major Case, but she trusts Ross’s judgment and knows that she is qualified.
Megan is not quiet, but she’s definitely not the loudest one in the room. She’s guarded about her past—while she may give the basics of her past—“Mom supported us because Dad left” she rarely gives specifics nor does she talk very much about her relationship with her parents. She understands why Logan might not want to either, but she doesn’t see why that means he can’t make conversation.
