Father's Day. Another stupid commercial holiday. Of course, Megan Wheeler wouldn't acknowledge the discrepancy between dismissing Father's Day and celebrating Mother's Day. She told herself it was perfectly fair to participate in one and scoff at the other.

The Major Case detective leaned back in the booth at the diner. While restaurants were packed, this place was quiet, only its regulars sitting at their tables, all spread out. The little waitress had quite a walk, being the only person taking care of the tables. Wheeler made a mental note to tip the girl well. She looked like she needed it.

Megan watched the door of the diner, waiting for Julianna.

Julianna walked in to the diner. It would be nice to have some distraction from the day. It was stupid to be distracted by it in the first place -- it was a day - just like Saturday before it and Monday after it - just a Sunday. Or it should have been. She hated letting it affect her so much.

She spotted the redhead quickly and walked over toward her. "Megan," she said, trying out the detective's name. She tended toward referring to the cops by their last names, even when she knew them well. Mike Kellerman, after all that they'd been through, was still 'Kellerman' to her. John Munch would always be "Munch," and so on.

"Julianna," the detective replied, standing when she approached and offering a hand forward, smiling just a bit. "Glad you could make it." It'd be nice to have some company that wasn't family today. Of course, it'd be even more enjoyable at a bar, but that wasn't allowed. She sat back down, settling back into the booth. Wheeler didn't know why the day brought the M.E. here, but she didn't ask. If she did, she'd be compelled to share her own story, or at least parts of it. Instead, all she asked was "Doing okay?"

Julianna shook Megan's hand, smiling as she did so. "Thanks for inviting me." She took a seat across from the detective. "I'm--all right. How are you?"

"About the same," she replied. Megan smiled just a bit, chuckling as she said, "I'll be perfectly fine tomorrow. Kind of silly, I guess." And it was. It was just another day, another stupid commercial holiday, but it bugged it.

"It's not that silly," Julianna said. "It's a day motivated by consumerism, that, like most marketer-driven holidays, tends to leave a group of people out. And yet, the minority, like minorities often are, is expected to put up with it, be okay with it..." She laughed. "You're right - it's silly and I'm obviously too defensive about it...when my dad was alive, I had no problem with the holiday."

Wheeler couldn't help but laugh a bit herself. "I think I'd be justified if I complained about Mother's Day too, but I always take my mom out to dinner... or at least buy her something nice." She shrugged a bit, smiling. "Glad to know I'm not the only one touchy about it, though." Granted... almost everyone else in her squad probably had some issue with the day, all things considered. Oh well.

Julianna chuckled and looked at the menu. "At least people can come together because they're set apart."

"Hey, I've seen the kid movies," Megan said with a grin. "It's always the band of misfits that wins in the end." She chuckled again, browsing the menu, even though she was fairly sure of what she wanted.

"That describes the people I gravitate toward, anyway," Julianna laughed and decided on what she wanted from the menu.

Wheeler flagged down the waitress, offering her a brief statement of sympathy for being the only one working then ordered. She ordered a grilled ham and cheese sandwich, which came with a plentiful side of fries and, despite the siren call of the beer taps she could see, an iced tea.

Julianna watched Megan interact with the waitress with interest. When both of their heads turned to her, she ordered. "I'll have a BLT," she said. It, too, came with a side of fries. "And--" She looked at what beer they had on tap. "A Pabst Blue-Ribbon." She smiled a thank you as the waitress turned to leave.

"This place has great food, as long as you're not looking for anything fancy," Wheeler said, grinning. Best to keep the conversation light, avoid talk about the actual day. She doubted either one of them wanted that.

"Seems like it," Julianna said. It was nice to be invited somewhere, nice not to go out on her own or have the pressure of trying to impress anyone. Not that she ever tried very hard, anyway, but still. "So how long have you worked with Major Case?"

"This is my third year. Took off awhile ago to work on a case that wasn't as closed as I thought, but I came back." She chuckled a bit more. "Funny thing? Once I was away, I missed it." She leaned back in the booth again, dreading the day she'd be more comfortable at a table. "Have you been in New York long? I think you've mentioned being an M.E. for awhile... or did I just assume that?" It was a logical enough assumption, and unless she'd written something down, Wheeler wasn't always sure what she knew and what she just assumed.

"I've been in the City almost two years," Julianna said. "But I've been an M.E. for nearly twenty. Worked up in Buffalo with the Erie Department of Health for a bit, then I was, uh, the Chief Medical Examiner for the City of Baltimore..." She gave a short laugh. "...after that it was Takoma Park, Maryland...and now I'm here." She looked at Wheeler. "Three years on the most elite squad? I'm sure you hear it all the time, but you look young."

"Wow," she replied. "Been a lot of places, it sounds like." Megan smiled a little more, saying, "Now, I admit, I wouldn't have pegged you as being an M.E. for that long. You don't look old enough." As for her own age, she shrugged, chuckling. "Helps that the captain used to run a vice unit I worked for. He got promoted and sort of... brought me along." Now, she'd proved herself, at least she felt so, but Megan wouldn't hesitate to admit that she probably wouldn't have gotten a spot in Major Case without Ross to vouch for her.

"...yeah, I'm a bit of a wanderer." She laughed at the age comment. "I'm 44. So...not 20 years, but getting there. Ah, Captain Ross." She nodded. "He's good people. I'm sure he knew you could do the job."

"I get the feeling," she said. "Kind of enjoyed that about working vice. Going undercover, being someone else for awhile while still doing my job." She wouldn't trade MCS to go back to vice, but she missed it every once and awhile. "I'm glad he gave me the chance."

"What'd you do in Vice?" Julianna couldn't help smirking when she said it. Vice cops were used to getting questions about prostitutes and johns. She was sure Wheeler wasn't any different.

Wheeler laughed, knowing the first thing that came to mind with female Vice officers. "Mostly drugs, actually. A few other cases, but apparently I make a convincing addict."

Megan laughed a little again under the gaze. She was too used to being sized up, to skeptical looks, but at least Julianna didn't give the feeling of judging her. She'd gotten that from far too many cops-- mostly older men. "It was interesting. Never a dull day."

"The early days in Buffalo were fun - everyone was kinda wild and a bit reckless...there were a bunch of us young kids - it was the first job out of med school for a few of us...when you're up state in the boonies...well..." She chuckled. "Baltimore...I grew up there and I was pretty close with the Homicide Squad at the time..."
